Composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1878, this piece was inspired by Saint John - an important figure in the Russian Orthodox Church. As Tchiakovsky was both into the aesthetics of life aswell as the spiritual (as show by his highly church-centric life) and in this piece of music, it is clear to see such a fusion being beautifully married together.
Being close to nearly four centuries in age from since it was first composed, this beautiful piece of music was during the middle ages the pièce de résistance for the Sistine Chapels Gregorian choir.
What makes this even more special however is its importance to classical music. As time progressed, it soon became illegal to write down this said piece of music, however, Mozart, only aged fourteen, was able to transcribe such a legendary auditory assault by only listening to it twice - initiating his classical career and foreshadowing his greatness
This piece of music is about the old pagan rituals (or re-appropriated by the church now being known as St Johns Eve) being carried out upon Bald mountain (Łysa Góra) in Poland. This piece truly shows the emotions roused up in a religious ceremony be it Paganistic or Abrahamic.
